You can recoat right after the paint gets tacky say in an hour and it will work. This is like just putting on one thick coat. If you recoat in 2-8 hours it may turn into a wrinkled mess. While I agree that using a spray gun set-up is most economical and best for large areas, I have always used rattle cans.
